Magnetically Levitated Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Pitched Style Roof

·          Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with sails that can receive wind forces from any direction.  Including up and down winds.
·         Magnetically Levitated – reducing friction, noise, vibration and energy loss.
·         Axial Flux Alternator – Allows it to generate large amounts of electricity at low rotational speeds.
·         Roof Mounted – Does not require a tower, allows the wind turbine to take advantage of air-compression velocity increases from roof effect.
·         Programmable Variable Coil Resistance – allows the increase of magnetic resistance as the wind speed increases.  This reduces the cut-in wind speed required for electricity generation.
Overcoming Challenges of the Conventional VAWT concept:
·         The ‘conventional’ VAWT has bearings to change
o    MVAWT uses magnet levitation, which does not need regular maintenance.
·         MVAWT starts at low wind speeds
o    Variable resistance coils - controls Drag.
·         MVAWT accepts wind from multiple directions
o    Sail design accepts all winds even from above.
·         The ‘conventional’ VAWT suffers torque ripple effect.
o     MVAWT has no drive train to torque.
·         The ‘conventional’ VAWT suffers wear and tear from vibration
o    The MVAWT is magnetically levitated, so there is no vibration.

There are five main aspects that affect the output of our wind turbine:

·         Wind Speed – Site wind characteristics.
·         Roof Effect - The shape of the roof can increase or decrease the performance
·         Coil Output – Number of coils
·         Sail Size – surface area and configuration of the sails
·         Inverter – the maximum amount of electricity is limited by the size of the inverter.
